The December holidays have come to an end and most of us are back at work, or dreading going back. Luckily there are weekends. If the thought of being back at your desk is bringing you down why not take a weekend break? This deal is exactly for that - a short relaxing break, far enough away from the city to have it count as a little holiday, but close enough so that you’re not spending most of your time on the road.
Swap busy city life for rustic farm life at the forested Homtini Guest Farm and awake each morning to the mooing of cows and the crowing of the resident rooster. Here life is slow, laidback and happy - the perfect combination for a wonderful weekend stay with your family or partner.
What we like about the location of Homtini is that even though you’re staying on a farm, by no means are you cut off from modern civilisation. Depending on how fast you drive, but typically 20 minutes, you’ll be in Knysna where a plethora of restaurants and shops await.
You could also spend the day exploring the towns along the Garden Route, an activity that’s sure to keep you busy the entire day. Then when you get back you can light a fire for a braai, pour some drinks, and relax to the sound of a crackling fire.
Located on the farm are three walking trails that pass through 60 hectares of private indigenous forest. Nearby is the Homtini Cycle trail. So bring bicycles and good walking shoes to enjoy the natural surroundings either on bike or on foot.
Guests on the farm can also make free use of the swimming pool and sauna. Massages are available for those who need some extra oomph of relaxation (at an extra cost).
Why kids will love Homtini
This deal is valid during the school holidays so let the kids come with! Homtini is not only a relaxing escape for adults but for children too. Here, kids can play in wide open spaces, go on hikes (supervised by parents of course), ride their bikes, play in the kids play area and admire the multi-coloured Nguni cattle. A holiday away from the city is just as important for children as it is for adults.
You and your family (or partner) will be staying in the family tent, secluded and nestled under canopies of shady indigenous trees, overlooking the Homtini river valley.
The tent is equipped with basic necessities, and if you wish to cook, you can do so at the communal, rustic kitchen. Shower every morning with jaw-dropping vistas of the surrounding area.
Bordering Homtini Guest Farm is the Millwood Nature Reserve with its beautiful streams, historic gold mines and cascading waterfalls contained in a large rainforest. Family-style picnics can be enjoyed at the designated sites and at the braai areas. There is also a quaint café with homemade, wholesome eats. The physically active can explore the fruits of the forest on hikes. These trails lead to cool, deep springs where hot and tired hikers can enjoy refreshing swims.
The farm is situated 15km inland from the Goukamma Nature Reserve, a coastal area with deserted beaches, high sand dunes with walking paths and the Goukamma river which is great for canoeing (the river at the bottom of the guest farm comes out into the Goukamma river).
