About Hazyview

Hazyview is a beautiful old mining town that’s named after the haze that hangs over the lowveld bushveld in summer. Hazyview is known for gold mining which played an important part in establishing the small town in 1959, starting with the construction of the post office. Hazyview’s central location to game reserves, especially the Kruger National Park, and to the Panoramic Route, makes it a favourable holiday destination among South Africans and international visitors alike.

Facts about Hazyview

  • The Sabie, Mac Mac, Sand and Sabaan river valley area surrounding Hazyview is extremely fertile and is every farmer’s dream come true. Hazyview produces 20% of South Africa’s bananas. Other crops include citrus, granadilla, pawpaw, avocado, pears, mangos, litchis, macadamia, ginger, flowers and timber.
  • The town was founded by a drunkard named Perry in the early 1900s. Perry ran away to the Lowveld after he thought that he had killed a woman whom he was building a house for.
  • The town of Hazyview was officially promulgated in 1957 and has grown from 14 shops in 1982 to over 300 now. Most of the shops are owned by Oscar Pistorius’ uncle.
  • Hazyview is home to the Tsonga, who occupy the north-eastern part of the Sabie River. To the south, you’ll find the Swazi people.

Hippo awesome

When was the last time you had dinner and there just in front of you, well a few metres away, was a beautiful hippo. Yep that's right, in fact one night there are two hippos on the grass. Nicely kept grounds and units. Friendly and accommodating staff. Meals were very nice and they do have an excellent little gift shop. Not far from Kruger Park either. Lovely cold drink upon arrival at the hotel as well. Would certainly recommend staying here.

Safari trip 2018

I loved the resort. It was charming and cosy with little cottage-style rooms. The dining area was beautiful with a lovely view of the Hippo Pond. The staff was always friendly and helpful, especially Amu and Siphilue. We enjoyed the delicious food too. The resort was also within walking distance to a lovely shopping centre.

Nice hotel, food good

Accommodation split between lodges and hotel rooms in the main block nearest to the hotel. Great views of elephants roaming in the morning and evenings in the hills, and hippo literally on the front lawn. Lots of excursions to do from this base. Lovely staff and nice large rooms with all the amenities.

Nice stay with hippos

Lovely estate with a plus - a hippo wandering in the hotel park! Cottage rooms are clean and have a pretty balcony. The location is convenient to start exploring the Blyde River Canyon. Recommended.

Trip of a Lifetime

I booked a two night stay at Hippo Hollow while I enjoyed a full day trip to the Kruger National Park on a safari operated by Elephant Herd Tours and Safaris. Upon arrival to Hippo Hollow I received a warm welcome from Nicholus. He checked me in, helped me with my bags and handed me the most delicious cup of homemade lemonade. He made me feel right at home. The accommodations were lovely, very clean and quaint. My suite had a large vaulted ceiling, a dual walk in shower and all the amenities of a major hotel. The food was absolutely incredible and the servers were very friendly. The attention to detail and the presentation were 5 star. I had the trout on my last night and it might have been one of the best meals I have ever had.

One of my the best experiences was during dinner. I sat on the raised outdoor terrace which overlooked the courtyard and slow-moving river. It was there when two hippos moved naturally through the courtyard. Hippo Hollow had a very nice guard who watched the hippos to ensure the guests could observe the animals and know they were safe. The service at Hippo Hollow outstanding, from the warm initial greeting to the impeccable service throughout the stay.

The hosts and all the staff go above and beyond to make their guests feel special. They enjoy the chance to interact with the guests for any travel suggestions or share local knowledge that they may be able to help with.
If you looking for a place to relax and be treated like royalty, this is the place to stay.
