What a stroke of luck to find this hidden gem. My hubby and I were looking to get out of Durban for the weekend to explore and relax. Umtamvuna River Lodge has a unique feel and so much to offer. As we arrived our first impression was 'wow.' Palm trees, private beach alongside the river and a well-maintained garden. The rooms are really nice with percale linen and good beds. This is very important to us as I am one of those who always travels with my own pillow, just in case. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Quinton, who runs the show, made sure that all our needs were met and more. Mathew, who runs all the watersports, took us on a really nice sunset cruise and his knowledge of the area was really interesting. He even convinced us to try wakeboarding the next day, which we thoroughly enjoyed and really want to do again on our next visit.
Paradise on steroids
Never would have thought that this slice of paradise existed so close to home. Let's talk exclusivity, style, tranquillity and utter peace, with the option of the opposite - thrill rides on jet skis, wakeskating, cliff diving, fishing, (the list goes on) - should you fancy a break from chilling hard. Easily one of KZN's hidden gems.
Writer's paradise or relaxation at its best
This is a place we all wish we could have called home by the river and the sea. The best of both worlds and, yes, just off the main roads and total bliss from the noise and madness of people and society.
The simple and rustic accommodation offers everything you could want. This is not for the snobby or " I have seen better" crowd. This is for people or families or couples who just want to get away from it all. Great birding, peace and quiet, and great relaxation. A little paradise for people who like the simple things in life and have time to slow down and enjoy life again. Service and food is rustic and forgivably slow as it should be on holiday. No pretences and simple and good food and people are what will make you want to stay and return. The gardens are beautiful and a popular weekend wedding venue. There are many attractions around the corner, and be sure to go for a boat ride on the river at The Pont, 5 minutes away.
This is a break-away of a lifetime and ideal for those times in life when you need to connect with yourself, your loved ones and your family. Thanks to the staff and, yes, expect me to be back again soon.
We were treated to a weekend here and we had a super time. We travelled as a family and found it to be a lovely, relaxing place. The river was great for fishing and the gardens and grounds fun for the kids to run and play, especially bouncing on the trampoline and squelching in the mud. There is a lovely clean pool to enjoy. The rooms were well decorated and very functional. The bathroom was clean and newly refurbished. We had a bar fridge and we could bring our own drinks etc. Rooms are provided with a kettle, plus tea- and coffee-making facilities. We were on a B&B basis and the breakfast supplied was tasty and freshly prepared. Both nights we stayed there we chose to eat at Umtamvuna and the food was good, especially the delicious pizzas on Friday night. The surrounding area is beautiful and worth a trip here. We had a super day at the Wild Coast Sun, Wild Waves water park. Umtamvuna is essentially a wedding venue and you can most certainly see the appeal, as the place is beautiful.
