Don’t let the name of this quaint but happening village fool you, Dullstroom is anything but dull or mundane. Made up of vast expanses of farmlands and lush wetlands, Dullstroom lends itself to many possible adventures. There are numerous attractions to keep the whole family entertained.

Dullstroom is famous for its abundance of trout. Avid trout anglers flock from all over in their attempts to reel in these elusive fish. Spring Valley Farm is no different. There are three dams on the farm - which are excellent for fly-fishing- as well as the Crocodile River (perfect for river fishing) which runs through the property. Don’t forget to pack your fishing tackle!
There are numerous other attraction to keep you occupied if fishing isn’t a preferred hobby. Take walks around the farm - there are designated trails you can follow - or bring your mountain bikes and cycle. Not only will you be faced with incredible scenery, but you’ll also see spectacular game up close, think black and red wildebeest, blesbuck, springbuck, duiker, mountain reedbuck, and birds.
What to do in the area
There are at least two reserves within proximity to Spring Valley Retreat. Dullstroom Nature Reserve is lesser known and perfect for those seeking solitude. There is a dam for fishing and to enjoy recreational water sports, and lots of space to roam.
Three of the world’s endangered cranes live in Verloren Vallei Nature Reserve. The area is visited by hundreds of tourists each year for that reason, and also due to it being a beautiful and peaceful part of the Steenkampsberg Plateau.
The town of Dullstroom itself has many art galleries and restaurants and other charming oddities worth visiting. The town is also steeped with history, with remnants left over from the Boer War. Pay your respects at the Stone Memorial and the Garden of Remembrance.
Enjoy some ‘me-time’ with a round of golf. Play on the 18-hole Ernie Els signature golf course at Highlands Gate Estate, considered by some to be one of the best-designed courses in South Africa.
Sample the area’s best whiskeys at Anvil Brewery if you’re a fan of the drink.
Explore the area on horseback - there is a horse riding school located near the establishment.
