The Details
Filao Beach Resort offers guests the incredible opportunity to enjoy the luxuries of an island resort getaway. Spend mornings or afternoons under a palm umbrella on the beach with an interesting book or magazine next to the sparkling blue pool.

Zanzibar is famous for great seafood and fragrant spices. Make sure you don’t go home without tucking into delicious peri-peri prawns and buttery crayfish at the resort’s restaurant. It’s a seafood extravaganza! Complement your meal with a local beer, like Kili or Safari. For dessert, you should give Mandazi a try, a Swahili doughnut made with coconut milk and cardamom.

Rooms at Filao Beach Resort are air-conditioned and equipped with a seating area and a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. Great for late evenings lying on the bed with your partner watching TV when you’re slightly worn out from the day’s activities. Rooms have a private bathroom with shower and come with garden views.

Discover Zanzibar

The beaches: the white-sand beaches of your dreams are a reality in Zanzibar. Picture turquoise waters and palm trees lazily swaying in the sea breeze.

The spices: dazzle your senses with fresh cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper on a tour of a spice plantation.

The history: once an important trading centre in the 1900s, Zanzibar remains a spice capital today.  Learn all this and more on tours of the museums in the old Stone Town.

Shopping: Kenyatta Street is famous for its markets displaying fresh produce and more spices than you could imagine.

Food: street foods are common in Stone Town. Live as the locals do by eating chapatti (buttery, flaky, delicious pita), kachori (deep-fried mashed potato) and, the most famous, Zanzibar pizza, which, funnily enough, has no resemblance to Westernised notions of pizza but is a mash of veggies, mayo, eggs and, occasionally, meat wrapped in thin dough and deep-fried. Fouridani Gardens hosts a nightly food market, which is a glorious affair and a must-visit for food lovers and adventurous eaters!

Did you know?

Stone Town hasn’t changed in 200 years. Walk down the winding alleys, paying close attention to the ancient Arab architecture and the elaborately carved elephant-proof doors of yesteryear.

There are 560 carved doors in Zanzibar, the oldest dating back to 1694. These doors were a sign of wealth and status, made for the ruling Arab and Italian elite of the time.

Prison Island, now inhabited by a colony of giant tortoises, once stowed slaves. Previously a place for torture, the island is now an idyllic tourist attraction with its views of the ocean, overhanging cliffs and lush vegetation.
