The Details
Visitors to Liliesleaf Museum will experience a journey of enlightenment, from struggle to liberation, to transformation.
Liliesleaf is a national heritage site where six of the Rivonia trialists were arrested for plotting to overthrow the apartheid government. Not only does the site commemorate a critical point in South Africa’s liberation struggle, but it keeps the memory of our history alive and real. The many fascinating stories and events that helped shape our democratic nation, are brought to life through interactive exhibits.
Liliesleaf was purchased in August 1961 through funds from the then Soviet Union by a front company of the Communist party, Navian (Pty) Limited.  The purchase of Liliesleaf coincided with the shift away from passive resistance of armed struggle and it became the high command of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the military wing of the ANC, with its first Commander in Chief being Nelson Mandela.
Visitors are welcome to explore the historical site at their own leisure or have a guided tour which lasts between 1 ½ - 2 hours.  Children under the age of 7, accompanied by an adult, pay no entry fee.
When Liliesleaf operated as an underground venue for liberation activities, it was referred to by some as Lil’s Place and to others by its codename “Cedric”.  There is a coffee shop on site which is aptly named “Cedric’s Café”.  Enjoy light meals and refreshments after your tour. The coffee shop is licenced and serve an array of craft beers and wine.
On his last visit to Liliesleaf in June 2005, Nelson Mandela said that what made Liliesleaf unique was that it is a place of discussion and engagement.  Liliesleaf extends this tradition by availing its facilities for corporates and conference use.
