Three lovely places to visit in Dinokeng:
Dinokeng Game Reserve
If you’re longing for a bushveld escape but don’t feel like the drive to Mpumalanga or Limpopo, choose Dinokeng Game Reserve instead. Dinokeng Game Reserve, located 120km from Johannesburg, is the only Big Five game reserve in Gauteng. This lovely game reserve has all the animals you might expect, such as antelope, predators and birdlife. There are other small reserves in the area that are just as wonderful, such as Roodeplaat, Rietvlei, Groenkloof and Abe Bailey.
Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve
Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is a well-known destination for those living in Gauteng seeking to escape to nature to enjoy a bit of birdwatching, picnicking, angling or water sports.
Roodeplaat dam was originally meant for providing water to Montana, Doornpoort and the Magaliesberg area, but was later developed to form part of a game reserve. The reserve is divided into a northern and southern side, each with its own attractions.
The northern side of the dam is great for canoeing, sailing and fishing. This side of Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is equipped with picnic sites, braai areas and bathrooms. Birds in the vicinity include terns, warblers, kingfishers and African fish eagles.
The southern side of the reserve is home to wildlife like zebra, waterbuck, warthog and jackal, and prolific birdlife like francolin, ibis, and cuckooshrike, among others. The southern side is also quieter and more tranquil than the northern side.
Cullinan
Visit the picture-perfect Victorian village of Cullinan for a lesson in diamond mining and an afternoon walking oak-lined streets. Cullinan made its name as a mining settlement in 1905 after the discovery of the world’s largest diamond, the Cullinan Diamond (which now sits in Queen Elizabeth’s crown, displayed at the Tower of London).
The lucky discovery of the Cullinan Diamond:
The Cullinan Diamond Pipe, where the Cullinan diamond was discovered only 9m from the surface, is believed to be the oldest diamond pipe in the world. Diamonds are still occasionally found there, but even though it’s unlikely you’re to discover one yourself, do place the working diamond mine tour on your list of things to do in Cullinan.
Oak Avenue
Witness a throwback to Victorian times when visiting Cullinan’s favourite tourist destination – Oak Avenue. Oak Avenue is a living museum lined with giant oak trees, beautifully restored old Victorian houses, art galleries, quirky shops, cafés and inviting restaurants. A seemingly popular restaurant choice among visitors is Jan Harmsgat se Agterplaas. Read more about Cullinan on our blog by following this link.
