World-Class Wine On Your Doorstep

South Africa is one of the major international players in the wine industry. The Western Cape is arguably the most wine-centric region, and its 18 wine routes and historically wealthy estates are among the most scenic in the world. Popular areas include Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington and Constantia.

History

The first wine was made in 1659 using French vines. Groot Constantia (Cape Town) is the oldest wine farm in the country, and its founder, Commander Simon van der Stel of the East India Company, received the title deed in 1685. The estate has been declared a national heritage site and is still a fully operational farm.

Its wines are still famous and have several overseas fans. Before he died in 1821, Napoleon enjoyed ‘Grand Constance’ as his drink while in exile. King Louis Philippe of France, the British Royal family and Frederic the Great of Prussia are all believed to have enjoyed the famous wine of Constantia.

All about wine

Today, the five popular grape varietals in South Africa are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. Famous wine farms and estates include Boschendal, Delaire Graff, Fairview, Kanonkop, Lourensford, La Motte, Nederburg, Spier and Vergelegen, among MANY others. You can enjoy wine tastings, cellar tours, vineyard excursions (seasonal) and every kind of wine pairing imaginable. From pancakes, nougat, cupcakes, ice cream, cheesecake and macarons to savouries such as pizza and soup, it’s a wine lover’s paradise!
