But what is the difference between monopolar and multipolar radiofrequency?

The poles of a monopolar radiofrequency (RF) devices are located far apart, with the inactive pole being placed at the back of the body and the active pole (i.e. the applicator) is used over the target area. Consequently, the RF current travels through all the layers of the skin, all the way to the inactive pole.

Multipolar RF, on the other hand, is electrical energy which converts to heat when penetrating the skin and fatty tissue. The RF current penetrates the skin layers to a predetermined depth to selectively heat the target area.
