The Quarter Kitchen occupies a section of the Original Breakwater Prison in 1860 and is known as the Good Conduct Ward. The Breakwater Prison now owned by the University of Cape Town Business School was built exclusively for “European” convicts as a Rehabilitation centre. “Non-European” prisoners remained in the old convict station for some time as cheap labour for the quarry and the harbour. They were also rented out to locals as house servants and gardeners.
