Chenin Blanc Profiles 

It’s hard not to love Chenin Blanc. It is versatile in style and sweetness and can adapt to a wide variety of tastes. Chenin Blanc makes light, dry summer whites and sparkling wines. It also offers oak-aged styles with similar flavors to Chardonnay. There is a Chenin Blanc wine for every occasion and every taste. 

Fruit: Yellow apple, quince, pear, baked apple, bruised apple, passion fruit, lime, honeydew melon, peach, persimmon, mandarin orange 

Other: Lemon verbena, ginger, honey, honeysuckle, jasmine, chamomile, saffron, apple blossom, coleslaw (oxidative styles), sake, cheese rind(oxidative styles), hay

Oak: Buttered popcorn, butterscotch, lemon curd, nutmeg, baked apple, graham cracker, meringue, marzipan, brioche

Acidity: Medium-plus to high acidity.

ABV: 12-14.5%

Flavour Profiles

• Dry: When the grapes are fermented dry and kept fresh, they produce a very lean, minerally style Chenin Blanc that offers up flavours of tart pear, quince, ginger, and chamomile.
• Off-Dry: When some of the grapes’ natural sugars are left in the wine, you’ll taste richer flavours of ripe pear, ginger, jasmine, passion fruit, and honeycomb.
• Sweet: Sweeter styles of Chenin Blanc have flavours of dried persimmon, toasted almond, mango, ginger, and mandarin orange.
• Sparkling: Sparkling styles can range from dry (Brut) to sweet (Demi-Sec), with Chenin Blanc’s classic characteristics of quince, yellow apple, plum, ginger, and floral notes.

Pinotage Profiles 

Pinotage is dark – darkly coloured, darkly scented, and darkly flavoured. Its fruit notes lean way over towards blackberry, plum, and black currant with earthy bramble in there. Its most distinctive note is the unmistakable smokiness that presents itself both on the nose and on the palate.

Pinotage is dense in colour and bold in flavour with notes of plum sauce, tobacco, blackberry, tar and liquorice.

Fruit Flavors

 It’s common to find purple fruits and black fruits in Pinotage, but occasionally you’ll taste amazing red fruit flavours of raspberry, red liquorice and even red bell pepper.

• Over 15% ABV

How to taste wine 

Take a small sip, not a big gulp, and hold it in your mouth, swirl it around and breathe in a little. This oxygenates the wine and opens it up, rather like swirling. Tasting is an extension of smell. Most of the flavours you get when you taste wine come through your nose as it’s connected to the back of your mouth. 

Things to look for:

• Body, how thick does it feel in the mouth? Is it full or closer to water?
• Sweetness, can you feel sweetness on your tongue? How sweet is it?
• Are there tannins, that drying sensation you also get in strong tea, and if so how strong are they? Do they taste ripe or is there a greenness there?
• Is there a bitter note?
• Look for acidity, and how fresh is the wine. Does it make your mouth water? Or is it smooth?
• Warmth, does the wine warm the mouth on the mouth after you have finished?
• And finally the finish, how long can you taste the wine after you have swallowed or spat it out?
